Dear neighbors,

As an active member of my neighborhood association, I’m usually on the other side of the table from politicians. However, I recently finished serving 8 years on the Horace Mann School Foundation board with a neighbor who would like to use his leadership skills in a more public role.

Paul Murphy is running for SJUSD School Board Trustee in Area 1, which includes the Northside area around San Jose High. When Paul joined the HMSF board, we were doing OK; but Paul really moved us up a level—several levels. Under his leadership, Horace Mann School made the leap into the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, in which SJHS is the final step. With his guidance, the foundation was also able to ensure that every classroom could go on educational field trips.

Paul found ways to leverage the money we raised, so it would go farther. His skills include not just understanding policy and school accounting (!), but the ability to explain it to parents, teachers, and benefactors so that they could support the school better, too. People sometimes say that others “work tirelessly”, which I thought was just a phrase, but Paul Murphy lives it. I believe that a vote for Paul is a vote for getting the most out of our public school system.
